mDialog and VDS Team Up for TV Everywhere Operations

Partnership provides an automated end-to-end solution for rules-based content and ad replacement in live linear streaming operations

San Francisco(05 Sep 2013)

VDS (http://videodesignsoftware.com), a leading developer of broadcast automation software, content design and plug-in products, and mDialog (www.mdialog.com), the leader in stream management and dynamic ad insertion on Internet connected devices, are partnering up to provide an automated end-to-end solution for rules-based content and ad replacement for live linear Internet streaming operations.

The solution brings together mDialog’s Smart Stream Platform and VDS’ Streamliner, to deliver frame-accurate advertising and content replacements, providing media content providers and service providers with a complete approach for dynamic ad and content replacement for live, linear TV Everywhere (TVE) deployments. The system’s frame accuracy is maintained when operating in live or recorded modes and when transitioning from one state to the other, making it the ideal solution for live news and sports.

The real-time system extends proven broadcast engineering workflows to power TVE to IP connected devices, including phones, tablets, smart TVs and gaming consoles.  With VDS Streamliner, mDialog receives accurate and timely industry standard SCTE104/35 signals, enabling a single workflow for any device.  These signals are then delivered to the streaming encoder, which conditions the ad break and provides signaling information to mDialog. The signals are processed by mDialog and result in seamless frame-accurate ad replacement, content replacement (blackouts) or house ads based on pre-defined rules, geographic restriction or viewer entitlement.

For ad insertion operations, the SCTE104/35 signals provide rich information on placement opportunities and TV commercial break ownership with as granular a breakdown as the original linear broadcast and/or configured through Streamliner business rules. For instance, this allows for separation between Broadcaster and local cable ads or breaks, and sub-categorization of ad pods such as barter or promo spots.

To further extend the existing broadcaster workflows, the placement opportunity is replaced with uniquely addressable ads via mDialog’s Ad insertion and Ad Router technology. mDialog manages the flow of audience targeting information such as ad insertion signal information, content metadata and client-specific targeting parameters such as device type and geo-location to the broadcasters’ Ad Decisioning Service using industry standards such as IAB VAST 3.0 or SCTE-130.

Through cloud side ad insertion and device-based measurement, this turnkey workflow provides traditional Linear TV with uniquely addressable advertising and truly enables a broadcast standard for the digital world.
